Your First Boxing Session: Everything You Need to Know Before Walking Through the Door

What to Wear for Your First Boxing Session

Don't worry if you've never boxed before - you don't need any specialist clothing for your first session.

We recommend:

  • Comfortable sportswear (T-shirt, shorts or tracksuit bottoms)

  • Trainers with good grip (avoid boots or heavy running shoes)

  • A bottle of water

  • Long hair tied back

  • Remove jewellery before training

You don't need to look like a boxer. Our focus is helping you feel comfortable, welcomed and ready to enjoy your first session.

Do I Need Boxing Gloves and Equipment?

No. If it's your first session, we'll provide any equipment you need.

As you become a regular member, we recommend having your own equipment for hygiene and comfort.

Typical equipment includes:

  • 12oz or 14oz boxing gloves (depending on age and size)

  • Hand wraps

  • Gum shield (if taking part in sparring later in your journey)

  • Skipping rope

  • Water bottle

Our coaches are happy to advise you before buying anything, so you don't spend money unnecessarily.

Do I Need to Be Fit Before I Start?

Absolutely not.

One of the biggest misconceptions about boxing is that you need to be fit before joining.

You come to boxing to get fit.

Every session can be adapted to suit your current fitness level, whether you:

  • Have never exercised before

  • Are returning after a long break

  • Play other sports

  • Already compete at a high level

Everyone works at their own pace, and improvement comes with consistency -not perfection.

What Happens During My First Session?

Your first session is all about helping you feel comfortable and introducing you to the basics.

A typical session includes:

Welcome

One of our coaches will introduce themselves, explain how the session works and answer any questions.

Warm-Up

A fun warm-up designed to improve movement, coordination and fitness.

Learning the Basics

You'll learn simple boxing skills such as:

  • Boxing stance

  • Footwork

  • The jab

  • Basic combinations

  • Movement and balance

No previous experience is needed.

Partner or Bag Work

Depending on the session, you may practise techniques on pads, punch bags or with a partner under close supervision.

Fitness Finish

Many sessions end with a short conditioning circuit suitable for your ability.

Cool Down

Stretching, recovery and an opportunity to ask questions.

Most importantly, you'll leave having learned something new and feeling part of the team.

Can I Come Alone?

Yes.

Many of our members walked through the door on their own for their first session.

Our coaches and members work hard to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels included, regardless of age or experience.

Parents are also welcome to stay and watch younger children during their first few sessions if they wish.

Many lifelong friendships have started through boxing.

Will I Get Hit?

No.

Your first sessions focus entirely on learning the fundamentals of boxing.

You will not be expected to spar.

Sparring is a separate part of boxing development and is only introduced when someone:

  • Has developed the necessary skills

  • Wants to progress into competitive boxing

  • Has the confidence to take part

  • Has the appropriate protective equipment

  • Has been assessed by the coaching team

Many members enjoy boxing purely for fitness, confidence and skill development and never spar.

Our priority is always safety, learning and enjoyment.
